Careers at ASIC

My experience as a graduate at ASIC was varied in terms of work, and it allowed me to gain exposure to different areas of the organisation. I was fortunate enough to be part of the legal stream, where I had an active role in working on matters ASIC was currently investigating and where enforcement action was contemplated for contraventions of the law ASIC enforces. As part of the program, I had the option to choose which area of the organisation I was most interested in, and I spent the majority of the program working in the legal services division, which allowed me to develop my legal skills and work on some really interesting matters involving serious criminal misconduct.

The program also offers a range of support for its First Nations staff by offering an Indigenous Network Group and monthly lunch catchups to get to know other colleagues from different areas of the organisation.

The ASIC graduate program has been a great opportunity for both my personal and professional development. I have learnt about the complexities of Australia’s financial system, sharpened my knowledge of the related laws that govern this system, and improved in my ability to create stakeholder relationships both internally and externally. I have rotated in various departments, gaining experience in assessing the risks and harm presented in reports of alleged misconduct, creating international relationships with foreign regulators, and stayed true to my values in social justice through supporting positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

What most surprised me in this role is the people at ASIC. I have had the pleasure of working with humble, genuine, and supportive people who appreciate the importance of balancing your work and personal life. I would definitely recommend the ASIC graduate program for anyone who is wanting to gain experience in the public sector or has an interest in governance and the financial system.

I am so grateful for being accepted into ASIC Graduate Program. The learning and opportunities on offer have helped build my confidence and skillsets. From a professional perspective, I have enjoyed the variety of work which has helped me gain an insight into different aspects of the financial system. This, I believe, is a really important aspect of a graduate program because you want to be exposed to as many different situations as possible. From a social perspective, everyone has been a sincere pleasure to work with. People are always happy to help out, and there is a real appreciation of one’s welfare and workload.

I've worked at ASIC for about a year and a half now, first as an intern, and now as very early into the graduate program. What struck me the most starting at ASIC, was how much support I received from my colleagues. It always feels like everyone is happy to give advice, and it's comfortable reaching out for help. I'd say that this has been the biggest contributor to my learning - the knowledge of the people around me. A lot of the work is also quite self-managed, so there's been a lot of room to grow, especially in terms of my soft skills. This is particularly the case for the grad fundraising project - which is entirely run by us graduates! It's been really rewarding and confidence boosting to see an initiative from just an idea on a page, all the way to a fully-fledged event.
